  Good to have for burning DVDs and CDs

  This is a great USB CD/DVD drive to have as newer PC and laptops do not come with CD/DVD drives anymore. I do a lot of video editing for events so I need a DVD burner and this does the trick. After unboxing the drive, this product is fairly light which makes it easy for me to carry around with me. It is definitely portable in size but not something I could just place with my thin laptop case, but something that can fit in my backpack. This dvd drive is a slide out which does make me concern with the constant opening and closing but so far there have been no issues with the new device. I would say do not pull it open really hard to avoid damaging or breaking the hinge. There is a force open pin hole you can use if the DVD is not coming out. It is just a plug and play so you do not have to worry about installing the drive. I have tried it on windows 7,8.1 and 10. I did not try it with mac but it does have a type c port so you can plug this into a type c and get a better transfer rate. There have been no issues and they all plug and played. I have not tried this on any of the older windows like xp and vista so I have no idea if it will even work. The usb cable provides a USB 3.0 integrated cable and type c. The cable is again integrated into the DVD drive so you are not able to replace it very easily which is a down side. It does however make it easier to store the cable on the DVD drive itself. The USB 3.0 and type c allows for faster transfer. With reading and writing, it runs pretty quick depending on which USB port you are using. If it 3.0 you will be running at speeds close to an internal CD drive. I would definitely recommend only using a 3.0 speed as it has a faster and more reliable transfer speed. If it is the type c it seems to be much faster than the 3.0 in terms of writing. It was able to burn an ISO of 4 gb in about 10-15 minutes. I have made quite a few dvds with these and it does not seem to be much connection issue nor corrupting videos. Make sure that device is on stable ground as you do not want the disk bouncing around as it could damage the laser or tray. It is not too noisy and fairly quiet. Another thing to note is that this DVD drive does not require an additional USB port to power the device so that is a plus side to me. Overall it is pretty good product and a great thing to have as DVD drives are not as standard with newer laptops.

  Light and compact - cord stores awesomely

  This solves a problem I didn't think would ever exist, but new laptops, mainly ultrabooks, come without an optical drive since most software is all online to download and activate. My wife and I both got New Yoga Laptops this year, and our older Dells are now in a closet with their DVD drives. While we don't typically use a CD/DVD anymore - I have lots of discs leftover from my life - Music that I might want to rip back to mp3's, old home movies, my College projects, and family photo sessions. Yes, cloud storage, blah blah blah, but most free sites are beginning to limit the quality of the photo resolution without a fee.Ok - so back to this drive - it's a cheap in price but well built. The case is nice looking, with a sturdy feel. The best feature is how the cord tucks away neatly underneath. And the cord allows you to to connect via USB-A or USB-C without an adapter. There is an optional USB-micro port if you connect to an older computer that does not provide ample 5V power via the USB data connection.With all my Windows 10 and the last Windows 7 laptop - I plugged the drive in and it was recognized in seconds. If the drive was empty when I Double-click on the drive in My Computer, or type d:\ into the run command - and the drive popped open and Windows prompted me for a disc. It read my old photo album and Office 2013 disc for install fine. Happy customer so far!

  A cheap drive that works, but may require additional power

  I needed an external CD/DVD drive to use with the Raspberry Pi 4 to try and get some old games working with Wine and BoX86. Some work, some don't. Don't get me started on Wine. Anyway the packaging is a very generic looking small box with the drive in a bubble-wrap bag. I would say it was packed well, but when I took the drive out of the wrap, I could tell something was rattling inside it. After opening the tray and shaking, a tiny steel screw feel out! Whoops! Luckily, it didn't seem too essential, because the drive still worked. However, I did need to supply extra power to the drive for it to work with the Pi. Luckily, it has a micro usb port for just that, and comes with a cable (although it was a bit short). The drive appears to read discs fine. I got music cds to work without any trouble. DVDs worked after I downloaded the necessary codecs for the Pi, and at least 95% of my old windows game CDs were recognized. The drive itself is basically a laptop-style drive put in an external case with a usb & usb-c cable coming out of it.Pros:CheapUSB-C connectorMicro-usb port for additional powerCons:Cheap!Questionable QC (that missing screw)Have to unplug it from the Pi before shutdown, otherwise the Pi is still running.

  Gets the job done, but slowly

  Bought this to replace a failed internal drive. It works fine but the read/write speeds are much slower than internal drives.
