Life finds a way...

4.0 out of 5.0 by The LEGO Guy on April 19, 2018
Jurassic World comin' at ya!

This is a pretty good LEGO set to complement the overall Jurassic World LEGO theme. The build itself is pretty straightforward, but yet gives you everything you need to keep the Stygimoloch caged and contained. However... as we all know, 'life finds a way,' so don't expect to keep the Stygimoloch contained for too long. :)

Speaking of the Stygimoloch, the dinosaur comes in 6 pieces which all connect fairly easily. The legs, arms, and head all move freely and smoothly... this is just another example of the high quality that LEGO stands behind. The dinosaur is actually a little larger than I thought it would be, which was a pleasant surprise.

The guard in this set has some nice designs on his torso and his legs, as well as, his face. Probably more importantly though, this set comes with the famous Dr. Wu. He looks great to say the least. Another nice feature of this set is the two dinosaur eggs that come with it... who knows when they will hatch! Something also worth mentioning is the fact that the barriers included in this set are compatible with several of the other LEGO Jurassic World sets, which means you can combine different LEGO sets to make a massive 'MEGA' dinosaur cage.

All in all... I like this set and think it's a worthy purchase. Having said that, at 222 pieces, the retail price point of $29.99 is a little high for my taste. I would recommend giving this set some time to hit a sale price before picking it up. Either way, the Stygimoloch and two minifigs are a nice complement to the overall Jurassic World LEGO theme.

They easily fall apart and drive you crazy

Very disappointing product from Lego. Bricks do not hold tightly. They easily fall apart and drive you crazy. In that sense it feels like fake lego toys. Moreover the enclosure pen is too small for the dinosaur figure. My son is very upset about all this.
My favorite small set in this theme!

The Jurassic World Stygimoloch Breakout has the distinction of being my favorite small set ($29.99 retail or under) over the past two films' worth of Jurassic World LEGO sets. Why? For one, it's got a unique dinosaur (found only in this set and in this movie) called the stygimoloch, which is known to be a natural head-butter! I have no idea what its role will be in the film, but it has the physical features of a raptor meeting a dilophosaurus yet with a very unique head mold--obviously for head-butting all your minifigs!

There are just two minifigures in this set, but they are very nice. Dr. Wu (who goes all the way back to the lab scene at the beginning of the original Jurassic Park film) survived Jurassic World and his experimentation with the Indominus Rex to obviously play another big part in the new movie. The last time we got a Dr. Wu minifigure in a LEGO set, the retail price was well over $100, so it's nice to see him here this time in a more affordable set. He ditched his white lab coat for a grey jacket here, but he is obviously still spending all his time in labs based on his updated digs in this set. LEGO has had no shortage of guard minifigs (aka Dino bait!) in the last two JW themes, and while the uniforms were awesome in the first Jurassic World theme, the guards had a lot of plain faces, boring hats/helmet, etc. I think the new line of sets has far more interesting guards, and this set has an awesome guy with a bearded face that has only been in two LEGO sets before (both Star Wars) and a sweet beanie/stocking cap.

If you've seen one dinosaur enclosure, you've seen them all, right? And LEGO has certainly liked basing JW sets around these. I do really like this one though--and when you get all the enclosure sets together, you can make one epic-sized compound of chaos. It's big enough for the dino to fit (unlike some of the others), it has a cool gate, the lab has an awesome table with a dino egg being studied, and one play feature is based on being able to create havoc with Dr. Wu's lab setup. There's also a nice little overlook with window as part of the lab.

I really dig this set for giving us something different than Blue and the two main characters for a low price. Usually you have to pay a premium any time you want one of the rarer dinosaurs or minifigs of some of the minor characters. I just hope the movie is good (not holding my breath this time based on those trailers), or I won't be spending any money on this particular theme. LEGO is producing too much quality stuff!
