I bought this hat to go with my daughters Uma costume and it is perfect. The ones in the store were too small or cost way to much. This one was just perfect. There are Velcro strips to bend then hat up but I think I will sow them on because my kids keep picking with it and one has already lost its adhesive strip. No biggie for this craft mom
Not great, but okay.

Alarmingly, this hat is not a tricorn when it arrives, and there are no instructions for making it into one. Careful inspection and another look at the amazon photo reveals 3 prong fasteners at the edge of the brim which can put into pre-made holes in the crown to turn it into a tricorn. For everyone to have a different opinion as to the size, the manufacturer must be sending out different sizes. Mine is about 24 inches, too big even for me. The label clearly states "Ages 14+." The gold trim is very well attached. My main complaint about this hat is that whatever it's made of (paper?) does not curl easily, so that when you turn the edges up, you do not have a smooth rounded surface. However, if it's the right size, it's certainly a good price to complete a costume.
Suited the purpose

My kid's school has a "colonial day" where they have to dress in costume. We needed a hat, and this seemed nice than the other options. On the plus side it is very sturdy and does not look "cheap". On the minus side, it is kind of big, and kept falling off my son's head. It is also heavier than the cheaper options. So take your child's head size into consideration before you purchase the hat.
runs large in the best way

Runs large in the best possible way. If you have a big head that normally can't wear cheap costume hats like this, it will actually fit, even on top of a wig. Took many coats of spray paint to turn this white, so if you were planning to change the color of this be aware. Paint beads off the surface (it's plasticky, not felt, as expected given the price) but will eventually stick to itself.

If you have a normal to small head you may need to add material inside the hat band to make it fit. My dancer has a largeish head and on top of a wig it fit so perfectly and firmly it stayed without pins for a 6 hour show, including acrobatics and going upside down. (Ground acro, we would have pinned it if he was going to fly on aerial equipment.)

It survived the show so much better than expected it even went back to the costume closet for the future, we didn't expect more than one use. Best $5 spent on amazon in a long time.

From a distance looks okay, but not up close. I have purchased other pirate hats that were much better made. This one is that cheap pressed felt stuff you buy at the party store. Corners are held up by velcro that doesn't stick together very well. I can't recommend.
Sturdy and as described.

Sturdy and as described. My son plays with this all the time and it's not destroyed yet. He runs across the yard yelling, "The red coats are coming". He's the most early American history obsessed 6 year old I've ever known. Fun fact: Sybil Ludington was 16 and she rode twice as far as Paul Revere to gather her fathers troops because the red coats were burning down the town of Danburry. She rode her horse Star from farm house to farm house in the rain, sneaking past bandits. It was a 40 mile trip, and she was able to gather 400 men from her fathers militia.
Grreat for priates and american revolution hat time period.

is a little to large for my big head, witch is normal I guess, never the less; it seems well made and not cheap and i definitely wear it, Ps. Since is not the normal wear fashions in the street, but when I wear it, people look at me funny with it on.
Too big.

Huge hat...does not fit me. Fits a guy though, adult. Craftsmanship is good though.
Hat is too small

3.0 out of 5.0 by Dark Kumquat on February 4, 2014
Large heads run in our family, so this hat is a bit too small for anyone. It would probably fit an average size head fine, but not a large head or a head with a wig. The head hole is also perfectly round, so you kind of have to crush the hat a bit when you put it on to make it a bit more oval shape (like a head). The other problem we had is the flaps are held up with velcro, which isn't strong enough and looks a little tacky. Otherwise, it is an ok costume hat, nothing spectacular.
