Comparison of multiple chapsticks/lip balms

3.0 out of 5.0 by Reviewer 007 on February 1, 2016
I naturally have very dry lips. As a kid, they were always split and bleeding. (Attractive, I know). Now that I am adult, I try many things to keep my lips from flaking and peeling away like the crust of a croissant. Croissants are good, but they are not something you want to kiss! I would also like to note, I am on an antibiotic for acne (which is drying), as well as Rentin-A (which is also drying), plus I do a wash with 10% benzoperoxide (also drying) every morning. So you can imagine why my poor lips go through. I was using Burts Bees chapstick, before I decided I needed something better. I did a lot of Amazon searching and here are a few I ended up buying.

Vaseline Lip Therapy, Creme Brûlée
Vaseline Lip Therapy, Creme Brulee 0.25 oz

This chapstick is basically flavored vaseline that comes in a tiny container. I really like how small and easy the container is to carry around. The chapstick flavor is good and subtle, it isn’t too overwhelming. This chapstick does a great job soaking in. My lips feel well nourished for 4 hours during the day with occasional lip licking and food eating, and it lasts all 8 hours through the night (I wake up with very soft lips). The chapstick leaves your lips looking like you put a lip gloss on them/greasy, there are time and places where that is bad and good. 5 out of 5 stars.

Himalaya Herbal Healthcare Nourishing Lip Balm
Himalaya Herbal Healthcare Nourishing Lip Balm, 0.16 Ounce

Upon initial use, this lip balm tastes very similar to bubble gum. I am not a huge fan of the bubble gum flavor. If you like that flavor, you might like this then. The lip balm goes on very smooth. However, it doesn’t last as long as the Vaseline Lip Therapy does. You get soft lips for about 2 hours with daily use, and it doesn’t quite make it through the night. However, this lip balm is much lighter than the Vaseline, leaving your lips not feeling heavily greased. Overall 4 out of 5 stars.

Aquaphor Lip Repair
Aquaphor Lip Repair, 0.35 Ounce

This chapstick is gel like in a squeeze container. This chapstick went on glossy/greasy like the Vaseline, but it wasn’t as thick as the Vaseline. I thought that maybe that it might be good that it is a bit thinner. However, this chapstick just wore away too quickly. I have to put this stuff on every hour to keep my lips moisturized. It does really good for an hour, but is gone too quickly. No smell or flavor, which is good to keep someone from licking their lips (if they have that problem). Overall, 3 out of 5 stars.

My own chapstick, 1 part beeswax, 1 part coconut oil, 1 part Shea butter

This chapstick has no flavor to it at all. Which is good to reduce lip licking. The chapstick goes on smooth, though when you use the stick down, the product is kinda lumpy inside the container; this can be a little odd at first, but I just image it working as a lip exfoliator. The chapstick does an amazing job on nourishing my lips. It lasts a fairly long time as well, close to 4 or 5 hours in the day time, and all through the night as well. It is a very light chapstick, not leaving your lips covered in thick greasy stuff. Overall, 5 out of 5 stars.

Burts Bees 100% Natural Lip Balm
Burt's Bees 100% Natural Lip Balm, Beeswax, 0.15 oz., 4 Count

This chapstick has a very minty refreshing feel when you put it on. It tingles your lips. However, this chapstick made my lips worse, not better. After using it every couple of hours for a week straight, my lips were bleeding and there were multiple layers of flaking occurring. I felt like I was a little kid again. I did research online, and I found out that the Minty (peppermint, spearmint, eucalyptus, or anything similar) is very drying to your lips. If you have chronic dry lips like I do, this will only make it worse, not better. I do not recommend this if you have dry lips. Overall, 1 out of 5 stars.

The winners were the Vaseline and my own personal mix. They both work equally as well, but glossy chapstick can only be used in specific situations. However, I am not disappointed in the Himalayan chapstick. I don’t use the Aquaphor unless I cannot find any of my chapsticks, and I refuse to even use Burts anymore.

Aquaphor has been making quality creams for quite some time. They've finally packaged it as a lip balm. The lip balm is of a slightly different consistency than the standard aquaphor as it's made specially for dry lips. As someone who suffers severely from dry and cracking lips this stuff is amazing. I put it on at night before going to bed and my lips remain moist until I wake up the next day. This is sometimes 12 hours later. The best part is it does not have to be applied with the frequency of standard lip balms such as chapstick which strip the natural oils out of your lips and is much thicker with a more rejuvenating characteristic than Vaseline which dries quickly and has to be applied frequently. If you need a quality lip balm that you don't have to apply frequently and will moisten your lips significantly this is the product for you.
Just go with the original Aquaphor

I've been using the original Aquaphor as a lip balm for a few years now. When my last tube was about to run out, I decided to order their actual lip formula to try. Overall I like it okay. It is thick, goes on smoothly, and makes my lips feel very nice. But I actually prefer how the slightly thinner original formula feels on my lips. Also, the lip formula doesn't last as long as the original formula for me. When I use the original formula at night before bed, it will last ALL night, I'll wake up with my lips still moist. However, the lip formula wears off for me after only a few hours! And the lip formula is also WAY more expensive, this tube is TINY for almost $4! I can get the original formula for $0.86/ounce, whereas this one is more than TEN DOLLARS PER OUNCE. Holy cow I should've paid more attention to that before because then I probably would have never tried the lip balm in the first place.

So overall: while this product does what it's supposed to and feels nice, I can get the all the same benefits much more cheaply from Aquaphor's original formula.

We've been using this for a long time out of the Aquaphor tub you can buy, but it's much more convenient in the small tube, of course.

Aquaphor is worth every penny. The first time we used it was for our 9 months old, many years ago, who in the middle of winter had terrible eczema on her cheeks from the humidity and cold. Just a day of it and it was clearing up. Her poor little face had looked so painful and I have been grateful ever since. We had to stop for a health emergency while traveling through Montana where the spring weather was still in the low teens. The air there was much drier than home but the cold made her poor cheeks even worse. She had the flu, we stopped at a children's clinic in Billings, and the doctor took care of everything, including the sample of Aquaphor. The kids have that problem there all of the time, and she swore by it. No kidding. Wow.

So if you need something for damaged skin or lips this is the best stuff. It's not heavy like vaseline and didn't cause clogged pores when used on facial skin. I wouldn't travel or go a winter without it.
Love this stuff during the dry months

Love this stuff during the dry months!! FYI Lipsense users - this will it cause that waxy buildup on you lips that causes lipsense to be splotchy! So it’s great!! I’m a lifetime chapstick user and not being able to use the normal waxy chapsticks has been killing me, bc it ruins the look of my Lipsense. But this doesn’t cause any issues!! I can apply this all day every day. It’s smooth and keeps me moisturized.

Tip: be consistent with use for several days. May not see results right away but after a few days your lips will be thanking you!!
Best Overnight Lip Treatment

I put this on before sleeping, expecting it to work like any other lip balm, and I was so surprised. Within 30 minutes, the dead skin came off my lips (I almost always have chapped, flaky lips), leaving behind soft, moist lips. When I woke, the lip repair was STILL ON MY LIPS. Vaseline and lip balm almost always wears off while I sleep, giving my lips plenty of time to start getting chapped again before I wake. I would definitely purchase again. I love this as an overnight lip treatment.
Lipstick-like applicator didn't work as expected.

When it comes to healing/moisturizing broken skin, there is simply NOTHING better than Aquaphor. There is a reason it is recommended by doctors and dermatologists. I bought this specific product for the lipstick-like applicator. In the past, I bought a tube and applied by finger. I should have stuck with the tube. It doesn't matter how gently you squeeze the lip repair, too much will come out, and you wil almost always end up eating some it. It doesn't taste too great, and it feels like a significant waste, I end up spreading the aquaphor across my lips with my finger anyway which defeats the whole point. Aquaphor is a 10/10, but the lip repair tube is a 5/10.
My lips are repaired overnight.

I am not new to this Aquaphor lip Repair however here's another product that works for me that i can't find at any of my local stores.Very fustrating! Luckily Amazon came through once again. I was happy to find a seller that has this available to purchase because come early Fall thru Winter my lips get dry and this is my go to product for over night repair.I only use at night because it leaves that oily feeling as expected with this.I wake up in the morning and my lips are moist and no longer dry.I use every night before bed and this is definitely my go to brand than in the morning before i head out the door i apply image so between the two my lips stay moist .Glad i can buy this on Amazon and its also cheaper here than what i was paying when the stores actually had this available.
Great stuff!

Boy, this really works! My son gets terribly dry and split lips. This is because he reflexively scrubs his lips dry after every sip or drink (OCD). Honestly, sometimes when I wake him up, he looks as if he's been out all night with the vampires because he's got dried blood on his mouth, or his pillow has blood on it. He also pushes large chips all the way into his mouth before biting down, causing the corners of his mouth to get cut. I was worried that these split corners meant he had a vitamin deficiency until I realized what he was doing. I tried everything to heal his mouth; petroleum jelly, Chapstik, medicated sticks, etc. and nothing worked until I used this stuff. It made a difference right away and even the difficult-to-heal mouth corners are almost completely healed after a week. Now people won't think he's abused or neglected, and I won't be worried about him being in a gang of undead.
It is so good, I literally threw away all my blistek and chapstick.

best thing in the world for dry and/or cracked lips. Even with practically brand new chapsticks and blistek on hand this stuff is so good I would never use the other stuff again so I threw them all away. I bought several more aquaphor tubes and keep on in each bathroom, each car, and one in the kitchen. Under normal circumstances I will use a little on my lips each morning and thats it but nice to have it handy if I feel lips are dry from dust or whatever or feel them start to crack.
