Pretty good...

3.0 out of 5.0 by Angie M. on December 8, 2011
When I was trying to decide which doctor's kit to buy, I was torn between this one and the Fisher Price medical kit (Fisher-Price Medical Kit.) In the end, I actually bought both, and this is why:

The Melissa & Doug kit has the adorable jacket and is a good price for all it contains, but it does not have a blood pressure cuff, which is something my son was really interested in. I was also worried about the stethoscope after reading the other reviews. After both kits arrived, I was very glad I had both!

The Melissa & Doug stethoscope is, indeed, not very usable. It needed a very specific battery, which I found in the jewelry department of our local major retail store that starts with a "W" and ends with "Mart." Then, after putting the battery in, the stethoscope makes this weird, loud coughing sound when you push the button. It's kind of disturbing, actually. My kids (ages 3 and 1), just stared at it for a while, and then my older child said, "Oh, it's sick!" The stethoscope also doesn't stay in my son's ears, so he just wears it around his neck.

There is no storage for all the pieces, either, other than sticking them in all the pockets of the coat. They fall out easily if the doctor's coat is moved, so we ended that pretty quickly. Since I had the Fisher Price kit, we just combined all the medical equipment into that storage bag, and it fit nicely.

The thermometer that comes with the M&D kit is also strange and doesn't resemble any thermometer my kids are used to seeing. I'm very glad I have both kits so the kids can have the best of both worlds! It also makes it easier to have two syringes, since that seems to be the favorite tool, and both kids can have one!

Admittedly, the surgical mask is adorable when I put it on the kids, but they won't wear it for more than a few seconds. Oh, and my son wears a size 5T shirt, and the doctor's coat is a little baggy on him, which I think is great since he can use the coat for even longer!
Very Happy Toddler!!

Extremely Happy 2 1/2 year old!!! I bought this for my granddaughter who loves to pretend to be a doctor. It is very nicely made! Fabric jacket with velcro tabs and see through pockets make this very child friendly! The doctor supplies are a good quality plastic and very sturdy. The doctor mask is fabric and I like that the ear straps are adjustable velcro. I really liked that I could have it personalized with her name on it. Excellent product!! The doctor supplies were held in place for shipping with red thread that was very easy to cut and remove. The stethoscope requires 3 AAA batteries and when the heart button is pushed, it plays a heartbeat sound.
Substandard personalization . . .

Just received the costume set which I had personalized with my granddaughter’s name. I chose to put Doc before her name but I’m so disappointed in how it came out. The “c” in doc is one tiny stitch away from looking like an “o” so it looks like it says Doo. I’m glad she’s too young to read but feel if a company’s going to offer that service and charge extra for it they should do it right. Costume looks well made and I’m sure she’ll still enjoy dressing up but I’m not a happy camper right now.
Excellent except for the surgical mask

4.0 out of 5.0 by M&M on March 5, 2017
The overall quality of the item is great. Thick fabric and plastic pockets on the lab coat. The ID badge is also very sturdy and allows you to glue a picture of your child in place.Only negative is that the surgical mask is poorly designed and will not stay on your child's face unless they have (abnormally) large ears....this resulted in tears and a tantrum from our 2yr old. It is something that could be fixed easily if you are even slightly crafty, but it's also something that should have been realized during product testing.
So far the best toy Dr. dress up kit for the kiddos.

5.0 out of 5.0 by Nick Mnemonic on July 27, 2014
The quality was as expected from the brand. For the price, very probably the best Dr. dress up set. My daughter loves the Doc McStuffins show, so we thought it would be fun if she had her own outfit. It's been almost a year and she still plays with the toys and outfit, which by the way have not gotten damaged after normal wear and tear over that time frame. The batteries last a very long time in these toys, which is always a big plus when toy shopping.

The coat fit a 4T pretty well, and probably a bit larger than that even. But even after that gets outgrown, the toys that come with the set will keep on ticking.

For the price range of this toy/outfit, you just won't find anything better.
The only Dr. costume you'll need to buy.

Sure wish I had seen this before buying the playschool Dr. set for my 3-4 year old grandson. Just like their Policeman costume (AMAZING quality and accessories), the Dr. set is way above average in construction and instruments. The stethoscope even gives coughing sounds. I does not give a heartbeat but none of the play sets do and at least this one makes noise. 4 great pockets to store the "instruments" in AND a mask, which Alex loves most of all. The mask has Velcro so it fits any head by hooking over the ears. There is a place to write the child's name in on a card in the front pocket and a large, realistic medical emblem on the back. Like all of their costumes, the Dr. outfit comes on a hanger with heavy plastic over it. That way, after playing, the instruments go into the 4 pockets, the stethoscope over the hanger, the lab coat on the hanger and then cover it all up to hang neatly in the closet. Sure beats having all those items all over the house! Melissa and Doug outfits really are worth way more than the price they charge to get all of their extras. I'm careful with my money but I really believe these costumes are the best this grandma, or anyone can buy.
Amazing quality!

I got this set for my three year old. The quality is great! There are no loose stitches and the pockets are holding up! I finally put batteries in the stethoscope, but the "heartbeat" was pretty creepy and not authentic sounding. My daughter asked, "can you make it stop? It sounds weird." HaHa, so needless to say, she plays with no batteries in the stethoscope.

The other accessories are good quality as well. The ear straps on the mask are little too big for tiny ears, but it still works.
Kindergarten Girl Loves It!

5.0 out of 5.0 by Humanoid on December 26, 2012
I found this on a list for gift ideas for either a Kindergarten or five-year old girl.

It's great. My girl likes both the dress up aspect of it and the tools.

One major advantage of this over other doctor toy sets is that the thermometer "works" without being put into mouths (or, heaven forbid, other orifices). The child can just click a button, and a new temperature shows up every time.

The stethoscope is also cool in that it makes its own noises--including coughing and heart beat sounds. Just have two AAA batteries and a very small screwdriver ready to activate it. Batteries and screwdriver not included!

Our girl is five, and about 41 pounds, and the white coat seems just a slight bit too large for her--but it fits plenty well enough for playing. Be sure to have a Sharpie handy to write the kid's name on the name tag.

The mask seems to be the weakest part of the costume set. It is poorly designed and doesn't stay on very well.

We bought our daughter about 9 or so Christmas gifts in this price range, and this was by far her favorite!
Gift didn’t miss a beat ( stethoscope is battery powered heart thump😉)

Reading reviews suggested going for this over a cheaper one and I’m so appreciative of that recommendation! This was perfect and a really fun gift for me great-great nephew! When I had an issue about the stethoscope I got immediate attention and by the time I needed the gift ( a very short time) I had the gift ready to deliver and it was a hit!!
Perfect for your little doctor

4.0 out of 5.0 by Jodi K. on November 6, 2013
My daughter wanted to be a doctor for Halloween so I figured this coat would be perfect for her. It was beautiful! Very well made and everything fits neatly in it's own pocket. I did not even attempt to put batteries in the stethoscope since the other reviewers said it made a horrible noise and really, my 3 1/2 year old doesn't care if it makes noise or not. My only complaints are that on it says the age is 3-4 years and when I received it the package said 3-6 years so as you can imagine it was VERY large on my 3 1/2 year old but that just means she will be able to use it as a dress up play coat for a longer time. My other problem is the ear buds on the stethoscope didn't even fit in her ears a little...they just fell right out! She wore it around her neck so it worked out but they should really work on fixing that. Other than those 2 issues, I loved this doctor coat and so did my daughter.
