Downy is a detergent capsules, tablets, fabric deodorizer, fabric softener, and liquid fabric softener brand owned by Procter & Gamble. It debuted in 1960 and was first test-marketed in the Philadelphia area. The company originally sold the product as a Liquid Fabric Softener. In 2000, Downy launched its first Detergent Booster product in North America. Since then, they've released several new Detergent Booster products globally. A few years later, they launched their line of " balls " which are small, round capsules that dissolve in the wash and release fabric softener. Downy Anti-Wrinkle is a liquid fabric softener that claims to remove wrinkles from clothes without ironing. It is applied to laundry while it is still wet, either in the washing machine or after taking the clothes out of the washing machine but before putting them in the dryer. Wrinkles are caused by fibers crossing each other and by clothing being stretched out of shape while wet. By adding Downy Anti-Wrinkle to clothes while they are still wet, the fibers are prevented from crossing and the shape is retained better as the clothes dry. As a result, fewer wrinkles are formed and clothes require less ironing. Downy also offers a line of scent-releasing products designed to make fabrics smell freshlywashed for weeks after laundering. These products include both dryer sheets and scent beads that can be added to laundry during the wash cycle. The beads dissolve and release their fragrance during the wash cycle, while the dryer sheets provide a fresh scent when used in the dryer. In 2015, Downy launched its " Odor Removal Collection ", which includes a Fabric Refresher spray and Scent Beads with Febreze technology. The Fabric Refresher spray is applied to fabrics between launderings to remove any lingering odors, while the Scent Beads are added to laundry during the wash cycle to provide long-lasting freshness.a
